The turkey is in the oven. It’s going to be Thanksgiving on Wheels again.
So I went to the grocery store and the cashier asked me about Thanksgiving. I reminded her that I was going to the nursing home again. She looked at me and said the following:
You do know, of course, that we shouldn’t even celebrate Thanksgiving. Because you know what the first Thanksgiving was all about. It wasn’t like they teach in schools. You do know that, don’t you?
I know what you’re going to say. You’re going to say it’s a day about spending time with your family and friends. But if you remember the first Thanksgiving, you’ll know you have no reason to celebrate.
You do know that, don’t you?
I used to refer to Thanksgiving as “Celebration of Mass Genocide,” but my mother objects. She also objects when I refer to Christmas as “Day of Consumerism and Over-Consumption.”
Last year I felt very put-out to be doing so much work for this holiday. But then I realized I’m doing it for someone I love who loves them. Which makes it okay, I guess.
Hope you are with the ones you love today.
