Where do you stand politically? Where do you think you stand politically?
If I had to describe myself, I’d probably say I’m an authoritarian leftist. Turns out I was wrong. I’m curious to see where RR readers stand. Feel free to post thoughts about your political identity, and then take the test and see the numbers. I’ll graph the results on a chart later.
Economic Left/Right: -5.12
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.59
Edited to add here’s the chart through sonic:
Economic Left/Right: -3.50
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.46
Economic Left/Right: -6.12
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -8.67
Makes sense to me. personal autonomy is very important, but that autonomy (at the moment) needs to be protected by the state.
Economic Left/Right: -9.75
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.87
I thought I’d be a lot more authoritarian too. I think of myself as a socialist.
Economic Left/Right: -5.00
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.82
Right there with Gandhi, the Dalai Lama and Nelson Mandela. Funny, I don’t always feel that peaceful.
Lurker here!

I’d consider myself a low-case L libertarian. I think people should generally be allowed to do what they want as long as it isn’t victimizing others. However, I can’t be an upper-L Libertarian, because I don’t believe in humanity that much. I wish I could believe in this Libertarian utopia where everybody acts appropriately and, for example, we don’t need taxes because people would naturally want to care for those less fortunate. But I just can’t. I don’t think people are that evolved, and I’m not sure they ever will be.
As for economic, I’d say I’m somewhat left; while I don’t think socialism can work as a system (once again, I don’t have that much faith in humanity), I think capitalism with some elements of socialism (as we have up here in Canada) works better than the purely-capitalistic alternative.
My test results:
Economic Left/Right: -3.75
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.13
So yeah, I ended up about where I expected on both scales.

Economic Left/Right: -9.88

I’ve gone a lot more libertarian since college. This is an interesting experiment in confirmation bias. I doubt many closer to the 10/10 number would read this blog regularly.
Economic Left/Right: -5.12
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -2.82
Economic Left/Right: -7.12
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.54

This is very cool – thanks for posting.
I came out Economic Left/Right: -5.88
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -4.56
Not totally surprised, as the sociopolitical figures whose graph points were near mine are folks who I admire. i did think I’d be a little closer to the authoritarian quadrant, though.
Delurking to post my results:

Social Libertarian/Authoritarian -5.59

Close to Nelson Mandela and Gandhi. That’s pleasant news.
Economic Left/Right: -7.00
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.46
Like Robin, I’m a libertarian with a lower ‘l’. I believe in freedom first and foremost, but I’d prefer systems in place to protect people from their “baser” impulses, like killing their neighbor to get the resource they covet, and whatnot.
Your political compass
Economic Left/Right: -9.12

I’m definitely more of an anarchist than a libertarian, but I guess there’s some crossover beliefs…
wow, this is my kind of crowd!
economic scale -8.88, Social/power scale -7.95
Economic Left/Right: -7.38

Economic Left/Right: -1.50
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.56
Economic Left/Right: -8.25
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.26
I can’t say that I fully understand the Social libertarian/Authoritarian scale, I consider myself a Social Democrat – I’m Canadian, and wholeheartedly believe in our system of “socialized medicine” and that it should be paid for by the state, through taxation. Don’t Libertarians believe in small government?
Economic Left/Right: -5.88
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.23
I guess I’m not surprised we all ended up in the lower left quadrant.
Economic Left/Right: -5.00
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.69
