Whenever military service came up I couldn’t truthfully say, ‘Yeah, I’m a proud Marine.  I tried to say it and it wouldn’t quite come out.

  1. “We didn’t want anyone to say we messed up, that blacks couldn’t be Marines,” Peters said.

    This makes me really sad. It reminds me of the look on my mom’s face when I was a kid and she said, “You canNOT act thoughtlessly because if you make an error, there are people who will think ALL people like us are bad. This isn’t just about you.”
