A brawl. A beating. Severely beaten. Beaten unconscious.*
And now a 17-year-old boy is dead and a 19-year-old Chicago man has been charged.
This is James Malecek. He has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, aggravated battery and battery.
The story isn’t clear, but reportedly 17-year-old Kevin Kennelly took a punch to the face as he tried to intervene in an altercation on an Indiana beach. He was knocked unconscious and was removed from life support two days later.
The police chief was quoted as follows:
Sulkowski said Thursday that what initially was called a brawl was more of a fight between Kennelly and Malecek.
“There was no brawl. It was a fight between two people. Somebody hit someone,” Sulkowski said.
He declined to say what started the fight.
“All these crazy stories we’re hearing are just that, crazy stories,” Sulkowski said.
What are these “crazy stories”? It took a little digging, but here’s the news report:
They claim that Malecek’s sister was first confronted by a group of intoxicated Mt. Carmel students and subjected to ethnic slurs. Malecek came to his sister’s defense, they said, and was outnumbered.
Crazy story, right? Reportedly some witnesses also initially gave a similar account. And because I know you’re going to ask, reportedly both Malecek and his sister were adopted.
*The Chicago Tribune reporter writes that Kennelly was “accidentally killed.” The reporter’s last name is Wang. Not that it matters or anything.
