“Dutch may use ‘decoy Jews’ to fight racism”

A hidden-camera video showing Jews being harassed on the street in a Moroccan neighborhood of Amsterdam has led Dutch authorities to consider combating hate crimes with “decoy Jews” — undercover police officers wearing yarmulkes. Enthusiasm for the unusual idea is a sign of the ongoing tension between the Muslim minority and the rest of the Dutch population over issues of immigration and crime.

The idea of using “decoy Jews” to detect and arrest bigots has been embraced by both a prominent Moroccan politician and by Amsterdam’s acting mayor, who is Jewish. Law enforcement officials say the idea is feasible but would only be of limited practical use due to entrapment concerns.

Story here. Thoughts?

  1. Having dealt with racism and harassment (as a woman and a minority), I am all for it. Its the same idea of police women pretending to be hookers to arrest the johns, though it only benefits a specific minority group. Aside from that, I don’t think its a very practical way of fighting racism.

  2. It’s a great way to pit two minority groups against each other and make Dutch Protestants and Catholics feel better about their own anti-Jewish and anti-Islamic bias. What a bad idea.

  3. I really hate this idea. Totally pits groups against each other, doesn’t contribute to understanding, increases paranoia toward the group in question.

  4. How could this be entrapment? Heck, what if they had a jewish police officer (which I imagine they must not)? If they just go about their shopping, they aren’t inciting any crime – unless being jewish really is considered sufficient provocation. And the fact that they are considering this to combat crimes against jews leaves me assuming that that isn’t okay.

  5. This is another example of “good immigrant” “bad immigrant” that we see so much of in the U.S.

It maybe also continuing romanticization of the past and the WW2 era in particular. Although I don’t know if the myth exists outside the US, the “Greatest Generation” sees themselves, and many other generations see them, as morally superior because they “fought the Nazis”. The Dutch showed solidarity with their Jews during the Nazi occupation and this act may remind them of their magnanimity and show how anti-racist they then were even though there’s now this anti-Moroccan sentiment.

  6. Like Ruth and IIA said: this pits the anger of two minority groups towards each other—and away from the majority culture.

  7. Uh, are they also going to use decoy blacks and Muslims to test the rampant anti-African immigrant/Islamaphobic bias? Because otherwise they’re just saying, “Hey, look over there at those brown people who are the real racists.”
