Attention all brown folks

Remember that teen who announced over a store PA that all black people should leave immediately?  Arizona just made the announcement for brown folks:

The bill, known as SB 1070, makes it a misdemeanor to lack proper immigration paperwork in Arizona. It also requires police officers, if they form a “reasonable suspicion” that someone is an illegal immigrant, to determine the person’s immigration status.

It passed the House and the Senate and I would expect that the governor will sign it. Because that’s just the way she is. But there’s more!

Citizens can sue to compel police agencies to comply with the law, and no city or agency can formulate a policy directing its workers to ignore the law — a provision that advocates say prevents so-called sanctuary orders that police not inquire about people’s immigration status.

Say whut?

Anyway, please form an orderly line. And don’t forget to close the door. Thank you.

  1. does this sound like freedom papers to anyone else? cuz – wow.

    and this?
It also requires police officers, if they form a “reasonable suspicion” that someone is an illegal immigrant, to determine the person’s immigration status.

    just scary.

  2. Absolutely a horrible idea.

Personally, my feelings on the off-the-books immigration issue have changed in recent years. Where I live now about a third to half of the population is undocumented.

I went from hey, we need an orderly society to hey, we need to legitimize these people. But honestly, what’s the best process for that? From my point of view it is a burden and really damned hard on their children. They grow up here, live here, know here as home. But arrive at adulthood vulnerable and with fewer choices than they need to succeed.

It has grown to be a significant situation here. I hope we find a way to work it out without the scary ICE raid thing.

  3. Wonder how they would handle a light-skinned, blonde-haired Argentinian or Brazilian tourist who lost their passport or forgot to bring it with them when they left the hotel room…

Arizona – echoes of Jim Crow laws reverberate.
