Ezell Blair, Jr., David Richmond, Franklin McCain and Joseph McNeil were 17- and 18-year-old college students. And on February 1, 1960, they sat down at a Woolworth’s counter in Greensboro, North Carolina, and waited to be served.
The waitresses would not serve them. The manager also declined. White patrons spat at them, harassed them and poured drinks over their heads. (Interestingly, many accounts of the incident don’t report this.)
