And the result?

Trick Samoan parents into giving up their children.  Tell American would-be parents you’ve found orphans for them.  Drag the kids to the United States.  Tear apart two sets of families with your lies.

And receive probation.  Unfuckingbelievable.

Here are links to previous posts about them.

  1. Good lord. How is that possible? Probation?

So … if a white American family had learned about a study abroad program, where their child could participate in a study abroad program in, say, Europe, where they’d live with a host family for a prescribed amount of time, and have wonderful opportunities, but then the family finds out that the “host family” actually had ADOPTED their child, and that this was a purposeful scam to steal children for money and adopt them out to new families … do you think the perps in that scenario would walk away with probation? Hell no.

And this, U.S. officials told ABC News that they did not think the adoptions would be disrupted. What? Really? Because it’s been proven to be a SCAM, that children have been STOLEN. For money. And they’re not going to reverse the adoptions? Yes, it will be painful for Family #2, but if you really love your child, how could you go along with this? Awful.

  2. more cowbell: that was what horrified me most about this article. How can you NOT return the child to their family when you find out they were stolen?!

  3. Resistance: yes, and good for that family – regardless of the situation, that must’ve been horribly painful. I can’t imagine. Still though, the fact that the family had a choice, that’s just wrong. One family, thus far, has chosen to do the right thing. Family #2 shouldn’t get to decide if the child’s true family gets their stolen child back.

  4. To be fair, I’m not certain that in every situation returning the children is the best solution. If children have been living in another culture and have formed longstanding attachments with a family after having already had their lives disrupted once, is it fair to THEM to uproot them again? There’s no easy answer. I don’t know if anyone else here is familiar with this story, but I think it’s been handled by all involved about as well as anyone could under such awful circumstances.

    But yes, PROBATION? Puh-leeez.
