Zuky is running a series on the Chinese American experience, including clips from the Bill Moyers documentary. Don’t miss the commentary as well.
The second part of this series discusses not only the tabloidy agitation of Wong Chin Foo but also the extensive legal battles which Chinese Americans brought to US courts in order to combat the systemic persecution they faced. Lots of folks these days like to think that the Chinese made it in the US simply by virtue of patient hard work and nerdy cultural proclivities, but the truth is that Chinese Americans vigorously pushed through every seam in the system that they could find in order to build lives. Human rights are never granted through benevolence; they are always won through struggle.
