Who falls under ‘people’
This story by white reporter Howard Witt (Hi Howard!) is about a Homer, LA man who was shot dead by the white police. Witnesses at the scene say that the white police officers then attempted to make it look as if the victim had a gun.
Wonder about the attitudes of the white police officers? Here’s a quote from Homer’s white police chief:
“If I see three or four young black men walking down the street, I have to stop them and check their names,” said Mills, who is white. “I want them to be afraid every time they see the police that they might get arrested. We’re not out there trying to abuse and harass people—we’re trying to protect the law-abiding citizens locked behind their doors in fear.”
You can see that he really meant that people are “white people” and law-abiding citizens are “white law-abiding citizens.” Here in RR world, we are taking the opportunity to call people of color “people” and white people “white people.” Of course, we’ve been doing that latter all along.

He’s also implying that young black men walking down the street must not be law-abiding citizens.
I guess the chief thinks that people are not law-abiding if they walk on the street while black.
Of course, young black men are not law-abiding. Therefore, they are the ones who should be locked behind their doors in fear (of police harassment).
and yet, they get offended if accused of racial profiling.
And white people wonder why people of color are suspicious of the police.
I don’t wonder why people of color are suspicious of the police… I am white and I am suspicious of the police. In my town the police also do not like poor people, women, or what’s commonly reffered to as “white trash”. I am all three, and I have been harassed by the police multiple times.
