Am I a bad person if I laughed?
Armoster, who is 6-foot-1, 300 pounds and describes himself as “kind of a big-ass man,” says that Enlow hit him across the head with the squeegee and then attempted to flee, falling down in the process. That’s when Armoster grabbed the 61-year-old Enlow and, as he puts it, began to “spank his ass like a kid.”
Armoster says that he purposely opted to spank the grown man with an open hand—as opposed to punching him with a closed fist—to teach him a lesson.
“You better make sure that you be a man the next time you meet up with me and not be a damn boy,” he recalls saying.
Kids! Kind readers! Don’t try this at home.

I laughed until I got to part where the black guy was charged for retaliating after he was called a racial slur and hit with a squeegee, and him being charge has led to further obstacles and prejudice against him (the black guy.)

I am not laughing, it’s not funny to hit someone, no matter what.

The behavior of both men is just sad….not funny at all.

Yes, just bare the racist insults. It’s always wrong for any person of color to actually react to racism that makes a white person uncomfortable.
*rolls eyes*
So hilariously funny. The “honky” deserved it.
Just shows how fucked up our justice system, and society is with Armoster (the black man) being charged! No justice at all if you’re not white.

i don’t understand why the man who wielded the squeegee was not charged also.

Kathy and Margaret, I respectfully disagree. I think that when you use a racial slur the other person is entitled to hit you.

Panracial, I think the white man hitting with the squeegee should have been charged with a hate crime, since he used physical assault and a racial slur.
But I don’t believe that assaulting a person in response to verbal attacks can be justified. While there weren’t any life threatening injuries in this case, what if there had been? I certainly do believe that verbal assaults,
especially racial slurs, are very damaging and painful, but I still hold my opininon that physical violence is wrong and doesn’t make me laugh.
The story does have a cynical twist to it, and I understand why you would laugh about it.

“i don’t understand why the man who wielded the squeegee was not charged also.”
Because the man who used his squeegee as a weapon was white and the system wants to show black men that you can’t just be defending yourself against white people. You need to just take their abuse.

Here’s why I laughed:
Racial slurs are humiliating (dictionary.com: “cause a painful loss of pride, self-respect, or dignity; mortify”.
Spanking the perp’s ass is justified retribution for it is equally humiliating in a way that just punching them is not.
I guess then that I did not laugh because it is funny, but with glee that Armoster redressed the balance.

Violence is violence. I’m not saying he should have knocked the man’s daylights out (which he didn’t), but the man did more that attack the black guy with a squeegee — his words were violent, therefore, they justified a violent response even a mildly physical violent one.
