President Hu calls for more role of overseas Chinese(03/07/08)
BEIJING, March 7 (Xinhua) — Chinese President Hu Jintao said Friday overseas Chinese can contribute more to the country’s modernization and reunification.
It is important to pool the wisdom of overseas Chinese and their relatives in this regard, Hu said while joining a panel discussion of political advisors from China Zhi Gong Party and the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese.
The advisors, or members of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), are in Beijing to attend the top advisory body’s annual session.
Overseas Chinese can help publicize Chinese culture, and enhance the understanding and bolster friendship between the Chinese and people of other countries, the president said.
Dear President Hu:
You don’t understand what it is like for us overseas Chinese to live in foreign countries. It is very hard. First, these white people don’t really want us here. They tease us and make fun of our accented English. We are stuck in low paying jobs with no health care. Our children are being teased and bullied at schools because they have black hair and Chinese eyes. Don’t believe in what the returnees told you about America. Sometimes they made up glorious stories so they don’t lose face in front of their countrymen. You must know how hard it is to be minorities in a country. Look at what you did to the
Tibetans recently. We still read Chinese newspapers. You may think we don’t know what’s happening back home. Yes, we do. You are asking us to be “good overseas Chinese” while we are trying to be false Americans and to survive. Please!
We left China mostly because we try to have a better life. Apparently you and your fellow officials don’t really give a rat’s ass about us when we were living in China. Some of my relatives are still having problem landing jobs. They are told that they can only have one child. My cousin feels very distressed by that because they only have a daughter. You seem to be a nice guy. The media paints you as the “Sentimental President”, quite an honor for a leader of the communist party. I saw how much you cared when the migrant workers were stuck at train stations in Chinese New Year. I think China will be ok. You are leading our country to a better place, aren’t you? By the way I will be coming back to Shanghai this year. Can you please waive the visa fees and give me a discount on airfare and hotel. It is quite expensive to come home, you know.
